Has any writers ever hypothesized if the internet could attain sentient awareness somehow in the?

future, like in terminator (not like the plot of terminator but just the principle, that the net eventually becomes an all knowing intelligence because it comprises totality of all human knowledge?? There must be brainiac computer scientist geeks that have thought this and wrote about it, --certainly sci-fi writers, wouldnt you think??? its an inteesting thought i think
