How do I get the lug nuts off my Jetta?

I have a 2001 Jetta GLS that I bought used. I need to get the rear wheel off to bleed the brakes, but some of the lug nuts are different from the traditional style. In my jacking/tire kit, i have the tire iron, the jack, and a little plastic insert for the handle end of the tire iron. It looks like there are places for other tools but I dont know if there should be things there or not. Can anyone tell me what should be there?
