How accurate are pregnancy tests?

I haven't been on the pill for 6 months, and i am usually like clockwork so when i was a day late, i took a pregnancy test and got a negative result. I am almost a week late now, and sitting inside bored today I wonder if that result was accurate. Anybody have any experience with this they would like to share?
